Scientific Beekeeping Training: Empowering Farmers through Sustainable Livelihoods and Pollinator Conservation

DDS-KVK conducts a wide range of capacity-building programmes in various agricultural and allied sectors, among which Scientific Beekeeping is one of the most impactful trainings. Over the past six years, DDS-KVK has successfully conducted 18 Scientific Beekeeping Training Programmes, benefiting more than 600 participants and establishing a strong foundation for promoting beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood enterprise while enhancing agricultural productivity through improved crop pollination.

This training has received an overwhelming response from farmers, farmwomen, rural youth and aspiring entrepreneurs. The programme has consistently attracted participants from all mandals of Sangareddy district as well as neighbouring districts such as Mancherial, Adilabad and Nalgonda, reflecting its growing regional outreach and impact. The continued adoption of beekeeping by trainees reflects the effectiveness of the programme, with many participants establishing apiaries for honey production and crop pollination, thereby generating additional income while enhancing agricultural productivity.

To further strengthen awareness and promote scientific beekeeping, DDS-KVK, Medak-I, Zaheerabad, organized a Two-Day District Level Seminar on Scientific Honey Beekeeping integrated with the Oilseed Awareness Campaign under the Khet Bachao Programme on 18–19 June 2026 at Didigi Village, Zaheerabad Mandal.

The two-day district seminar was inaugurated by Dr. V. Divya, Executive Director, Deccan Development Society (DDS), in the presence of Dr. C. Vara Prasad, Senior Scientist & Head, DDS-KVK; Sri Pandari, Horticulture Officer, Zaheerabad; and Sri Paripurna, Progressive Beekeeper. The technical sessions were coordinated by Dr. N. Snehalatha, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection) and Course Coordinator, along with other KVK staff members. Participants were trained on scientific beekeeping practices, including bee biology, bee flora, pollination, apiary establishment and management, honey extraction and processing, colony division, migration techniques, pest and disease management, and the value and market potential of bee products. The programme also featured the inauguration of the newly established Apiary Unit at DDS-KVK and hands-on practical demonstrations, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills required to establish successful apiary enterprises.

Impact of the training programme:

The Scientific Beekeeping Training has created a significant impact by promoting the adoption of beekeeping among farmers. With financial assistance from the Rainfed Area Development (RAD) Scheme of the Line Department and continuous technical support from DDS-KVK, 450 farmers have established apiary units for crop pollination, improving pollination services and crop productivity. In addition, 8 entrepreneurs have started commercial apiary units for honey production, demonstrating the programme's success in generating sustainable livelihood and and additional sources of income.

Success Story: From Training to Enterprise

The Scientific Beekeeping Training conducted by DDS-KVK has successfully translated knowledge into action. A trainee named Sri Gattula Ramu from Hyderabad, who attended the training in January 2026, immediately ventured into a part-time beekeeping enterprise by establishing Shanmukha Natural Foods in collaboration with fellow beekeepers. Through honey extraction, processing, and weekend beekeeping operations, he produced and marketed 50–60 kg of honey, generating an additional income of approximately 37,700 during January to April 2026, with the enterprise continuing to expand. The beneficiaries acknowledged that the practical training and technical guidance provided by Dr. N. Snehalatha and DDS-KVK gave them the confidence to successfully manage bee colonies and process honey. Their achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of the training programme in promoting scientific beekeeping as a sustainable livelihood, strengthening pollination services, and fostering rural entrepreneurship.
