Goat Farming Demonstration Unit
At DDS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Zaheerabad, we maintain a thriving Goat Farming Demonstration Unit with 11 adult Osmanabadi goats and 6 kids. The Osmanabadi breed, native to parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the Deccan region of Telangana, is renowned for its adaptability, rapid growth, and high disease resistance. These goats are primarily black with occasional white or brown patches and are valued for both meat and milk production.
-
Weight and Size: Adult males weigh approximately 34 kg, while females weigh around 32 kg, with body lengths of 68 cm and 66 cm, respectively.
-
Milk Yield: The average daily milk yield ranges from 0.5 to 1.5 kg.
-
Diet: Each goat consumes about 4.5 kg of green fodder daily. Their diet should also include at least 1 kg of dry fodder (like pigeon pea, peas, or leguminous hay) for balanced nutrition.

Goat Farming as a Sustainable Income Source for SC Women Farmers
Goat farming offers a promising livelihood opportunity, particularly for farmers in our district. Under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP), our KVK has supported SC women farmers with goats and essential medicines to help boost their subsidiary income. Each beneficiary receives three goats with necessary medicines and vaccines.
Goat farming, a traditional rural activity in semi-arid regions, plays a crucial role in ensuring family sustenance, especially during droughts when fodder is scarce. It requires minimal resources—like family labour and dryland pasture—and provides a regular source of income from milk and meat. Furthermore, goat farming helps preserve cultural traditions while fulfilling the community's nutritional needs.
To support this practice, our KVK, in partnership with consultancy services, offers training on income generation through goat farming. We focus on:
• The production of dairy products from goat’s milk
• Sustainable goat rearing techniques
Our Goat Farming Demonstration Unit serves as a model, showcasing the benefits of Osmanabadi goat farming and contributing to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
