Cattle Demonstration Unit
Deoni Cattle Demonstration Unit
DDS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Zaheerabad maintains a Deoni Cattle Demonstration Unit as a core component of its organic and integrated farming system (IFS) interventions. The unit currently houses seven Deoni females and one Deoni breeding bull, serving as a live demonstration for farmers on breed suitability, productivity, and resource recycling under semi-arid conditions.
The Deoni breed is promoted at DDS-KVK due to its proven adaptability to the agro-climatic conditions of Sangareddy district and its multipurpose utility in smallholder farming systems. Animals are managed primarily on locally available fodder, crop residues, and tree leaves, demonstrating low-input feeding strategies suitable for rainfed regions.

A distinctive feature of this unit is the systematic integration of Deoni cattle with organic input production. Cattle dung is utilized for the preparation of vermicompost, vermiwash, and ghanajeevamrutam, while urine is used in the formulation of panchagavya, jeevamrutam, beejamrutam, dasaparni extracts, and micronutrient-enriched bio-solutions. Milk and milk by-products are demonstrated for seed treatment and plant health management, strengthening on-farm nutrient cycling and pest suppression.
The demonstration unit functions as a capacity-building platform for farmers, farm women, and extension personnel, highlighting the role of indigenous cattle in reducing input costs, enhancing soil health, and supporting organic agriculture. The DDS-KVK Deoni unit serves as a replicable model for sustainable dairy-based farming systems in Telangana’s semi-arid regions.
